“In the early morning hours of November 8, Fox News Channel declared that the pivotal state of Florida had gone for George W. Bush. At 2:16 a.m. Fox announced that the Texas governor had won the state, thus securing the 271 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. The other television networks followed suit in a matter of minutes. The call was subsequently withdrawn, and to date the Florida outcome remains undecided.”

One big difference is, of course, George Bush had not been poisoning Al Gore and the very real struggle for democracy in the Ukraine puts the bleating on about the Florida election result from 2000 firmly in perspective.

In addition, since that time the US has had another election that should leave absolutely no doubt at all in the minds of rational people about who won the election. As one of the largest democracies in the world, the US has every right to tell the ex-KGB Putin to stop sticking his oar in.

And if you don’t like America, try Vaclav Havel for size.

“Allow me to greet you in these dramatic days when the destiny of your country is being decided for decades ahead. You have its future in your hands. All trustworthy organizations, both local and international, agree that your demands are just. That is why I wish you strength, perseverance, courage and good fortune with your decisions.”
